SWIMBRIDGE HUTCHERTON LANE

8/200 Hutcherton Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Probably late C17 or early C18. Rendered stone and cob. Slate roofs
with gable ends to main range, hipped to front projection. Brick stack at left
end, rubble stack with off-sets at right gable end and lateral hall stack to rear.
There appear to be 3 main phases in the development of the plan. The original
farmhouse appears to have consisted of a through-passage plan with single rooms to
each side, the hall to right heated by a rear lateral stack. The great thickness
of the wall between the hall and room adjoining to the right suggest the whole wing
was added rather than being the extension forwards of an inner room in an original
3-room plan. In late C18 or early C19 a right-angled 2-storeyed dairy wing was
added to rear, partially enclosing the hall stack and causing the rear through-
passage doorway to be blocked off. 2 storeys. 3-window range of 3-light casements
above slated porch with 1/2 glazed door flanked by 3-light casements. Wing to right
has slated porch with 2-light window to left. Former granary at end with external
stone steps to rear side. Principally C19 2 and 3-light casements to rear of wing
and main range. The dairy extension with apple-loft over has corrugated iron roof.
Two 2-light casements on each floor to east side, and single window on west side.
Leanto at left gable end of main range formerly lofted over for combining pig and
henhouse now used as store shed.
Interior: Rough chamfered beam to hall otherwise interior and roof structure
altered. Dairy fittings intact in the rear extension.
