Description

AIRTON -
SD.95 NW

3/3 3 Ellis House and Ellis
Cottage
20.2.58

II

House, now two houses. 1696. Slobbered rubble with stone slate roof. Long
range with short cross wing to left. The cross wing has 2 small chamfered
lights at ground level and a C19 square fixed light above, with a large dovecote
in the gable. Modern doorway and door in the return. The main range then has
two bays set back, with a slightly chamfered doorway (either recent or
completely replaced) and a similar 3-light window; over these are sashes with
glazing bars. Two more bays step forward with a chamfered doorway (the slightly
pointed lintel has been raised) inscribed E 16 WA 96. Over this is a small
chamfered light. Beside it is a sash window with glazing bars, similar to two
on first floor. Large fixed window to right hand side of ground floor. To
right return wall is a massive external chimney stack. Inside Ellis cottage
(but opposite the inscribed doorway to Ellis House) is a very large elliptical
arched fireplace with a shield on the lintel carved with the same initials and
the date 1702.
