Home Farmhouse and range of farm buildings enclosing foldyard to south, including attached walls and freestanding wall with pig troughs

Planned farm group. Early C19, farmhouse alterations dated 1881. For the Firbeck Hall estate. Coursed squared rubble limestone, pantile roofs. Near-symmetrical, quadrangular plan; mostly one-storey. Tall five-bay barn to north flanked on left by altered one-storey outbuilding and on right by farmhouse now with added storey, attached stable-block wing encloses east side of yard whilst west side has a detached cowhouse and to south is a detached pigsty with flanking walls and detached walls to front, one with pig troughs.

Barn: five bays. Large quoins. Central waggon entrance with elliptical arch flanked by slit vents; shaped kneelers and gable copings. Attached outbuilding on left has original door and slatted casement on left otherwise C20 openings spanned by girders.

Attached farmhouse on right: French window on left of original opening, with cambered arch, two casements to later upper storey with plaque dated '1881'; plinths and bands to right end stack and to ridge stack on left.

Attached stable-block forming wing to front right of farmhouse: ashlar surround to boarded door on right has later casement on its right and two multiple-paned casements on left with mounting steps and later openings beyond; shaped kneelers and gable copings to right end of range.

Cowhouse: eight bays. Segmental-arched heads to doors of bays two, six and eight and slatted casements to other bays; shaped kneelers and gable copings.

Pigsty: three-bay gabled entrance front with door flanked by shuttered casements, gable slits, shaped kneelers and gable copings. No roof at time of resurvey, end stack to rear gable. Returns are brick and have attached stone-walled pig pens and attached wing walls enclosing the yard.

Freestanding wall to front has an arcade of nine pig troughs fed by two internal shutes, attached wall on left forms division of yard.

Although altered the group retains the essential elements of a planned farm unusual in this area.
