Estate entrance gateway and lodge. c1760. Probably by James Paine for the
Earl of Scarbrough. Ashlar magnesian limestone, lodge has Westmorland slate
roof; wrought-iron gates. T-shaped lodge with attached wing wall on right
curving to link with large gate piers with double gates, convex wing wall to
right of gate with end pier. Lodge: 1-storey, 1:1 bays facing roadside.
Sill band, casements with glazing bars in round-arched openings, cross-wing
projecting on left has panelled door in its short right return; eaves band to
hipped roof with tabled end stack an right and similar stack at junction of
T-shape. Later outshut to left return has pantile roof. Gate piers: each
has a plinth, a rusticated shaft with band beneath block with paterae, a
pedimented cornice surmounted by ribbed cup to pineapple finial. Gates:
square-section bars linked by 3 low rails; 2 curved upper rails, the lower
with scrolls, the upper with crest of arrowhead finials; matching side panels
with urn and arrowhead finials. Wing walls have plinths and plain copings,
wall on right terminates at projecting wallstone pier.
