2/86 South Lodge and
17.12.86 attached gatepiers

II

Lodge with attached wall and gatepiers. Early Cl9; gatepiers probably late
C18, altered. For the Wetherby Grange estate. Ashlar sandstone, concealed
Welsh slate roof; magnesian limestone gatepiers. Single-storey 3 x 1 bay
lodge with additional bay on right and projecting wall on right which links
to gatepiers. Lodge: channel-rusticated plinth; central bay projects and has
stylobate of 4 half-round steps to a Doric distyle in antis semicircular
portico within which is a glazed door with side-lights in moulded architrave.
Flanking bays each have a recessed panel containing 16-pane sash in
architrave on sill blocks. Plain frieze and moulded cornice beneath
balustrade with ashlar dies and turned wooden balusters. Corniced end stack
on right. Left return: as front bay 1 but with blind window. Plain addition
to front-right of lodge links to a rusticated gatepier with teardrop finial
and to larger rusticated gatepiers with bands and panelled blocks above which
are resited sandstone pedestals to carved oak-leaf wreaths from each of which
rises a bear's paw grasping a severed human hand. The gatepiers have wing
walls each with a blind door recess, wing wall on right has end pier with
teardrop finial then curves around towards Al embankment. Old iron gates in
very poor condition. The lodge matches that surviving incomplete at south
end of Boston Road, Wetherby (q.v.). Wall and gatepiers included for group
value only. Additions to rear of lodge are not of special interest.
