Description

SE44NW BOSTON SPA MOOR END
LS23 (north side)

2/83 Moor End Cottage

II

Small house. Mid C18 with later additions and alterations. Coursed, squared
magnesian limestone, Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 windows to 1st floor; 1-
storey, 1-bay wing set back on left; C20 wing to rear right. Large quoins.
Central part-glazed door with 3-piece lintel flanked by renewed 3-light
horizontally-sliding sashes with glazing bars under matching heads. 1st
floor: older windows of same type; painted window over door. Shaped kneelers
and chamfered gable copings; rebuilt brick end stacks. Wing set back on left
has French window beneath a segmental stone arch; monoclinal roof with end
stack on left. Left return: raising of rear eaves clearly shown on gable.
Interior:wing on left, reputed to be a local bakehouse, has an oven on left
of fireplace having cast-iron door in the shape of an arcaded panel.
Interesting as one of the few houses of Boston Spa which predates the main
wave of late C18 building that followed the discovery of the Spa waters.
