Almshouses and schoolroom. Endowed 1741 by Mary Lowther; altered and
restored. Sandstone ashlar, stone slate roof, modern brick chimneys.
Rectangular range formerly of 6 units (3 each side of the centre) but now of
4 units. Single storey, symmetrical, in Classical style; 3-bay pedimented
centre, breaking forwards, has a central doorway with tall 6-pane overlight
all within a Gibbs surround including a triple keystone and a cornice; above
the cornice, a pedimented panel with painted lettering (slightly worn):-

Flanking the doorway, 12-pane sashed windows with Gibbs surrounds. The side
ranges now have doors (a) and 9-pane sashed windows (b) a-b-b-b-a-b and b-a-
b-b-b-a respectively, all with raised plain surrounds (but the 2nd window on
each side was formerly a door). Hipped roof with 6 ridge chimneys. Modern
addition to rear in matching style, with hipped roof. Rear wall of brick.
