Entrance Lodge, mid C19 by Salvin. Red brick and stone with tile
roof. 2 storeys. Turret, archway, and 3-bay lodge. The stonework is
rock faced with smooth dressings. The main arch of the gateway is
Gothic and recessed with shallower arches and ribs in the archway.
The opening has a pair of flat topped oak gates on ornamental strap
hinges divided into vertical panels, one containing a small
wicket-door. The archway is ovolo moulded and is flanked by a round
tower, with conical roof, off a storey-high square base (south) and a
large reducing buttress (north). Two-light trefoil-headed windows
surmount the archway east and west with the inscription "Confido
conquiesco" beneath the window on the rear (west) side of the opening.
The lodge (north) has shouldered-linteled metal casements in pairs, to
ground floor, and trefoil headed casements, in stone half dormers, to
end bays at first floor. The first floor centre bay has shouldered
lintels. The north gable and dormers have copings with fillet moulded
kneelers to the dormers and gablet finials to the gable. Stone
chimney, reduced at ridge level has slotted fillet cap. The doors in
the archway, which lead to the round tower and lodge, are studded oak,
hung on ornamental strap hinges, with heads fitted to shouldered
lintels.
Interior: The doors in the lodge entrance porch are boarded and
studded with ornamental strap hinges.
