House. Dated 1670 on bay window; late C18/early C19 alterations. Rubble with
boulder plinth and ashlar dressings; some quoins; coursed squared sandstone
upper 2 floors of bay window. Stone-flagged roof with stone gable copings.
T plan: main block has left cross wing. Main block 3 storeys, 3 bays; wing 2
storeys, one bay and 6 on left return. Main block: inserted 6-panel door in
second bay under tooled flat stone lintel; similar lintel over inserted 12-pane
sash with projecting stone sill in first bay. First bay has chamfered stone
surrounds to altered first-floor window, with horizontal sliding sash, and
2-light stone-mullioned second-floor window; moulded horizontal elliptical -
lights over door on each floor. Right end bay has deep square full-height
projecting bay window, with 3 front and one side panels in panelled flat-
fronted mullions and surrounds, the inner faces half-diamonds; ogee-section
cornices above ground and first-floor windows, the former truncated by door
alteration, the latter continuing as string across left bays. First-floor
windows placed high in floor; second floor of projecting bay has small square
windows at eaves under low pitched roof. Left gabled projection blank except
for large square window at right on ground floor in C20 stone surround. All
gables have cyma-moulded kneelers, plain copings, and banded end stone chimneys,
the right much smaller than its large external stack. Moulded panel on second
floor of projecting bay has low-relief date and initials 16 GES 70, said to be
for the Simpson family, over primitive representation of deer and hounds.

Rear stair wing under continuous roof of different pitch; 2-storey rear outshut
under catslide roof. Cross wing has C20 glazing in square window at right of
ground floor; C20 glazing and porch on left return, and similar glazing and
inserted garage door at rear on inner return from main block.

Interior: ground floor has stop-chamfered stone fire with straight lintel, and
moulded wood door-surround (door missing) to salt cupboard; closed-well stone
stair; stop-chamfered beams; many original doors. Cross wing has flat Tudor-
arched chamfered stone fire in rear gable, with square salt cupboard-recess to
right; resited pair of large crucks against rear gable, original position in
wall not known.
