11/69 Woden Croft
II
House, formerly a private academy run by Edward Simpson. Dated 1792 (on front
door lintel) with additions dated 1810 (on rear door lintel) and later C19 rear
additions. Dressed sandstone. Stone-flagged roof and stone chimney stacks.
Main block with set-back wing attached to right.
2-storey main block. Originally 5 bays with projecting 3-bay centre; left bay
demolished in early C20. 3-bay centre has flush quoins and central partly-
glazed 4-panel door in flush surround; door lintel inscribed ENS 1792.
Doorway flanked by 6-pane casments with flush sills and wedge lintels. 3
identical windows above. Right bay has flush quoins; canted bay window;
tripartite window above with similar casements. Roof, hipped over right bay,
has coped left gable. 2 ridge stacks with top bands and water tables.
2-storey, one-bay wing has flush quoins. 2-light windows, with similar casements,
to both floors. Low-pitched hipped roof. Tall lateral stack, above right
return, with top band and water table. Remains of semicircular-plan bread oven
to rear of right return.
Altered interior: dogleg staircase, of 2 flights plus landing rail, with moulded
ramped handrail on thin turned balusters. Several imported 2-panel doors, with
butterfly hinges, in architraves.
Glazed late C20 conservatory, attached to left return, is not of special interest.
