3/24 Nos. 1 and 2 Church Cottages
-
- II
Two adjoining cottages, probably originally a single tenement. C16, with possibly
earlier origins, extended in C17. Unrendered stone rubble. Thatch roof with
stacks with brick shafts at each gable end.
Probably originally a 3-room-and-through-passage plan, the front and rear doorways
both later blocked. Internal partitions altered and room added at right end when
divided into two occupations, each of 2 rooms flanking passages.
2 storeys. Left-hand cottage has 3-window range of small C20 2-light casements 6
panes per light. 3-light window to left of blocked doorway to former through
passage, C20 door inserted to right with hipped thatch roof. Right-hand cottage
has a C19 3-light casement on each floor to left of C20 gabled porch with slate
roof. The 3-light windows to right on each floor are probably original C17
casements, with small leaded panes surviving to all 3 lights of upper storey and to
central light of ground floor windows, the outer lights 2 panes each. Lean-to shed
at right gable end. 2 buttresses to rear lower end. Hoodmoulds to rear blocked
doorway and to window over.
Interior not accessible.
The close proximity of the cottages to the church suggests they may have originally
served as a church-house.
