14/14 Pair of houses at east of southern
side of farmyard, and barn adjoining
to west
GV II
Pair of houses, late C17th, altered. Sandstone rubble with stone slate roof.
2 storeys, 5 bays. The ground-floor windows to bays 1, 3 and 4 have fragments
of rebated and chamfered jambs. That to bay 5 has plain reveals. On the
1st floor bays 1, 2 and 3 have rebated and chamfered surrounds. Bays 4 and 5
have rebated anc chamfered 3-light mullioned windows. Bay 2 has a door with
moulded surround. To its right is a small rebated and chamfered window with
central mullion removed. A 2nd door between bays 3 and 4 has a moulded
surround with shaped lintel inscribed 'IP'. The barn adjoining to the right,
possibly early C19th, is of squared coursed sandstone with a roof of modern
imitation stone slates. It has 3 wide entrances with long-and-short jambs
and with segmental arches formed from 2 pieces of stone each, with false
voussoirs and projecting keystones. The left-hand entrance is separated
from the one adjoining by a quoined straight joint which suggests that it,
and the left-hand end of the barn, are a later addition. At the far right,
beyond the right-hand entrance, is a door with plain stone surround. The
ventilation slits have plain stone surrounds. The right-hand gable has a
coping with kneeler.
