2/19 Little Fairing
GV II
House. Early C16, extended in C18/19. Timber framed, plastered, roof thatched.
4 bays facing W, consisting of 2-bay hall with axial stack inserted in left
bay c.1600, parlour/solar bay to right, service bay to left. C18/19 single-
storey extension to left. C19 external stack on right return wall. One storey
and attics. 4 C20 casements and 2 more in gabled dormers, all diamond leaded,
C19 plain boarded door. Old lime plaster with sawtooth indentations on front
and right return wall. Roof hipped at left end, half-hipped at right end.
Original sprockets under eaves. In right return wall, one C19 horizontally
sliding sash of 3 lights. The interior has heavy studding with curved braces
trenched to the inside, large wood-burning hearth. In the hall there is an
inserted floor, c.1600, consisting of a chamfered axial beam with unusual
treble-convex stops, and exposed plain joists of horizontal section supported
on pegged clamps. The parlour/solar bay was floored from the outset, but the
floor has been rebuilt in the C17 with a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue
stops and exposed joists of vertical section supported on pegged clamps, approx.
0.60 metre above its original position. The floor in the service bay is C19/20.
Diamond mortises for unglazed windows below the half-hip at right end. The
rafters have trenches for high collars, removed, smoke-blackened above the hall.
The site slopes steeply from S to N; the rising ground and floor levels at the
right end account for the rebuilding of the floor at the higher level.
