Snooker club, formerly house. Dismantled in 1870 in Norway and reconstructed on its
present site for John Fulford, a local wool merchant. Built entirely, inside and
out, of reputedly fireproof timber on granite plinth. Gable ended slate roof.
Irregular brick chimneys.
Plan: symmetrical H-plan with interconnecting rooms on ground floor and large
central hall.
Exterior: 2 storeys with cellar. Symmetrical garden front has 1:3:1 windows, outer
ones of 3 lights in gabled breaks, inner ones 2-light, casements with transoms and
labels, first floor outer windows have panels over centre lights. Verandah between
breaks with central steps to lawn. Entrance front has 1:2:1 windows with outer
breaks and large central gabled porch with elaborate fretwork and carved decoration
including bargeboard. Original doors with fretted lower panels. Gabled oriel on
brackets to east return elevation.
Interior: Very good and virtually complete, retaining most of its cladding and
hand-painted art nouveau decoration. Fittings include fretted ceiling roses and
cornices, door furniture and wide staircase. The walls are lined with tongue and
groove planks and some rooms have elaborate cusped arcading below cornice and dado
levels.
