House, originally probably farmhouse. Early-mid C17 with mid-late C17 addition.
Rendered cob and colourwashed rubble walls. Thatched roof hipped to left hand end
and gabled to right and rear wing. Projecting rendered rubble stack with brick
shaft at left end and brick stack at gable end of wing.
Plan: 3-room plan, narrow central room heated by axial stack at right-hand end with
file entry in front of it. The 2 end rooms are both heated by end fireplaces but
the left-hand one may not be original. In mid-later C17 a heated rear wing was
added behind the right-hand end. The house was divided into 2 cottages in the C19
but has recently been converted back to one.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front, 5 windows on ground floor, of
C20 1 and 2-light casements, the right-hand ones with metal frames. C19 plank door
at left-hand end.
Interior: right-hand end room has chamfered axial beam with hollow step stops. Its
fireplace has a chamfered wooden lintel and dressed stone splayed jambs. The
central room has heavy axial beams with deep chamfers and hollow step stops. It has
a fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel and elongated pyramid stops. Brick oven
in left-hand side. Opposite the fireplace the wall has C17 panelling above a bench.
Left-hand room also has chamfered axial beam.
Roof: roof timbers over main range replaced in C18 or C19. Over rear wing is one
C17 truss consisting of straight principals with cambered collar halved on with
dovetail joint.
