Burlton memorial and railed enclosure approx. 5m south of chancel of Church of St. Simon and St. Jude

Chest tomb and railed enclosure. Probably c.1822. Limestone.
Rectangular with tapering ends, moulded capping and plinth supported by ball
feet on stone base to corners. Chamfered top ledger with broken finial
lying on north side of tomb at time of resurvey (January 1987): urn-
shaped with scalloped underside, cable moulding to rim and intersecting
with floral motifs to sides. Cable moulding around moulded inscription
panels with rosette emblems to corners and centre, north commemorating
Jane Burlton (died 1781), her husband, John (died 1797), her son, William
(died 1822) and his wife, Margaret (died 1824). Brass plaque on top
ledger and inscription on south side in memory of Edward Burlton (died
1843). Carved floral emblems to ends with fluted fans to corners.
Tomb stands within railed enclosure on low chamfered plinth; spear-shaped
cast-iron railings formerly with urn-shaped standards, now missing except
to south-east corner.
