House. Late C16 or early C17, altered and extended c.1920 by
W.H. Godfrey. Timber frame on roughcast sill, roughcast walls. C20 S
wing and rear projection dark weatherboarded on painted brick sill.
Steep old red tile roofs. 2 storeys and attics, T-shaped house set well
back from road facing W. Original 3-bays, 2-storeys part has remains of
an external rear lateral chimney to N bay, projecting S gable chimney
to S bay, and floor of squared oak joists on chamfered axial beams.
Floor structure appears to have been raised in middle and S bays in
c.1920 when large oak staircase built in middle bay, tall S wing and
jettied rear bathroom wing and N end single-storey lean-to added. W
front has a small gabled dormer on the roofslope, a 3-lights window on
each side of the 2-lights window over the entrance, a 6-lights window to
each side of central plank door sheltered by a gabled weatherboarded
open porch. 2-lights window sheltered by tiled hood for larder in N
lean-to extension. Weatherboarded projecting gabled S crosswing has a
4-lights window to ground floor and 1st floor and a 2-lights attic
window. Flush casement windows with small panes. Old plank door.
Interior has exposed framing of walls and floor structures, with jowled
posts, straight tension braces in partitions, clasped-purlin roof with
collar and vertical queen struts to each truss. Ovolo-moulded window
mullion re-used in attic floor structure in middle bay. Exposed joists
and beams and oak plank doors in S wing by Godfrey and turned balusters
in closed string dog-leg oak stair. Old 2-panels moulded door with
T-hinges in N room on ground floor. (inf the owners).
