Block of 4 estate houses. 1913 by Charles Edward Mallows probably for
Demaine Saunders family. Roughcast with fan pargetting on brickwork,
dark weatherboarding to apex of 2 front gables and aprons of bay
windows, oak arcading to recessed fronts. Steep handmade red tile roofs
with bellcast and laced valleys. Red brick internal chimneys. A
symmetrical group of Arts and Crafts style estate houses set well back
from road, facing S. 2-storeys at rear but roof swept down to
single-storey along front and on inner sides of 2 short 1½-storeys wings
projecting to front. Central passage to rear. Rectangular leaded bay
windows alternate with moulded oak plank doors with iron strap hinges
under front arcade with posts and long curved braces. 4 hipped dormers
on front roofslope. 4 heavy square chimneys with enlarged tops, along
ridge. Projecting gabled wings have 3-lights flush oak casement windows
to Ist floor and 4-lights deeper window to ground floor, both with
rectangular leaded glazing and iron opening lights. Set back at each end
a hip-roofed wing extends to E and W, and low building in the angle.
Authentic detailing includes pegged joints to framing of arcade,
cockspur catches to metal casements, and oak benches beside the entrance
doors. Land in front of block divided into quarters with axial path from
road enlarged into circular path half-way, around octagonal platform of
yellow paving brick with oak picket fence and cast iron pump fixed to
post, with spurred spout.
