House. C15 or earlier S crosswing, hall range early/mid C17, N bay
probably C19, renovated after stripping to frame 1973. Timber frame on
low black painted sill, roughcast with frame exposed in older parts.
Steep old red tile roofs, S wing hipped. 2-storeys house, facing W, set
back on large plot next village green. Projecting 2-storeys jettied W
crosswing has catslide W outshut, set back, and front gable altered to
hip. Convex curved tension braces and central window on 1st floor, and
straight tension brace to ground floor. Higher 2-storeys hall range has
central chimney and framing in 2 bays with very narrow central chimney
bay in which ground floor 2-light window replaces former lobby-entrance
doorway. Stair to rear of stack. 2 windows to each floor. Flush 2-lights
casements. Single bay N extension with matching window to each floor.
Boarded door now gives entrance into S wing. Round-headed recess in each
face of large square chimney stack. Interior has exposed timbers with 2
3-lights original diamond mullioned windows and shutter grooves in S
wing, arched braces, cambered tie-beams, collar rafter roof. Axial beams
carry floors of hall range, and upper room has a 4-centred arched brick
chamfered open fireplace. Windows with ovolo-moulded mullions remain. S
wing has edge-halved scarf joints with bridled butts in wallplate. (RCHM
