Manorial House, Late C16. Timber framed with colourwashed brick in cross
wing gables. Pantiled roof. L plan with subsidiary south gable tending to
H plan. 2 storeys and attic. East front recessed range has door to left
under flat hood. 3 cross casements to ground floor of 4, 3 and 2 lights
probably C18 replacements. 2 5-light timber mullioned windows to first floor
with casements. Deep band of pargetting at first floor level with scroll
and diaper patterns extends into north cross wing. Cross wing has late C18
door and 2 mullioned first floor windows of 4 and 3 lights. Gabled roofs.
Both cross wing gable ends stepped with cross casements under pediments in
both storeys and attic but attic of north wing without pediment. Rear
elevation stopped to south by stepped gable of cross wing with external stepped
stack. 4 blocked windows with remains of mullions. Brickworth is English
bond. Centre roughcast with large external stepped stack gabled back to roof
to left of door and mullioned timber casement. Scattered C18 replacement
casements to remainder of centre. North cross wing gabled with bargeboards
and 2 replaced casements, the lower one under segmental arch. North elevation
has C17 8-light timber hollow mullioned window with rolls to ground floor.
Interior timber frame complete. Kitchen in north wing close studded with
chamfered bridging beam. Dog-leg staircase in timber framed well with middle
rail. Upper corridor runs through front of house connecting wings. Simple
roof of collars and principals in centre, the cross wings with the addition
of butt purlins.
