KIRTLINGTON,
NORTHBROOK
Walled gardens and pavilion approx. 50m. to S of Northbrook Farmhouse (not included)
GV II
Walled gardens and pavilion. Early C18. Chequer brickwork and limestone rubble;
Stonesfield-slate roof. Main walled garden, approximately 120 metres by 90
metres, has brick walls 3 - 4 metres high divided into panels by shallow piers
rising from a plinth; rounded brick coping ramps up in places. Smaller garden,
added to west, has lower rubble walls with a flat stone coping, and has rounded
corners on the west side. 3-storey brick pavilion tower, in the east wall of the
main garden, has 5-course rusticated quoins; original openings with flat gauged
arches include the doorway flanked by tall windows, on the garden side, and some
blocked openings, but there are small inserted openings on the upper floors.
Pyramid roof has an ornamental weathervane. Interior: early-C18 balustrade at
first floor; top floor has a heavy structure of interseting chamfered beams.
Garden front overlooks an elaborate Baroque pond. Northbrook was the site of the
C16/C17 mansion of the Dashwood family, destroyed 1750, but the gardens
continued to serve Kirtlington Park (q.v.).
