Nos.3 AND 4
GV II
Pair of semi-detached houses. 1848. Developed, and probably
designed, by James Wagstaffe. Grey brick set in Flemish bond,
stucco, roof of slate. Three storeys over basement, the
principal front of each house two bays wide with a lower porch
wing set back at the side. Basement stuccoed, with banded
rustication. All windows flat-arched with stucco architraves
and reproduction sashes with margin lights, the ground-floor
windows having shouldered architraves and bracketed sills;
stucco quoins to ground floor as far up as a broad band of
brick running over lintels and surmounted by a stucco cornice.
An attic window to the inner bay of each house, forming a pair
flanked by pilaster strips with a blank bay between and
covered by a stucco cornice and blocking course, which breaks
forward over the strips. Steps up to porch, the entrance
flat-arched in a plain stucco architrave except that no 4 has
pilasters and a cornice on consoles; panelled door and
overlight. The porch of no 3 single-storey with cornice
continuous from the principal front; on no 4 the entrance is
incorporated in a C19 two-storey extension with hoodmoulds to
ground and first-floor windows and hipped roof. The main roofs
hipped with stacks on party walls.
