Three terraced houses. c.1847-9. Developed, and probably
designed, by James Wagstaffe. Yellow brick set in Flemish
bond, stucco, roofs of slate. No 39 three storeys over
basement, nos 38 and 40 two storeys. Nos 38 and 40 are three
bays wide, the outer bay set back, no 39 is three bays wide
and double-fronted. Basement stuccoed with banded rustication.
Ground-floor window flat-arched with moulded architraves and
cornices on consoles except outer windows of nos 38 and 40
which have moulded architraves only and are blank. Inner
windows of nos 38 and 40 have balconies on brackets with iron
railings. First-floor windows flat-arched with sill band,
moulded architraves and cornices on consoles except for
central window of no 39 which has a pediment and outer windows
of nos 38 and 40 which have moulded architraves only and are
blank. Second-floor windows are flat-arched with moulded
architraves linked to brackets of eaves cornice. Boxed eaves.
Hipped roofs with stacks on party walls. Steps up to entrance
of no 39 which is flat-arched with Doric pilasters, plain
entablature and cornice, panelled door and overlight. The
entrances to nos 38 and 40 are in the side elevations: steps
up to flat-arched entrance with Doric pilasters; plain
entablature, cornice on no 40 only, panelled door and
overlight. The outer bays of nos 38 and 40 have a plain stucco
band to parapet. Rear elevation of no 39 has original
semi-circular bay to basement and ground floor.
