GV II

Terraced houses. 1821. Developed by Richard Laycock. Grey
brick set in Flemish bond, stucco, roofs of Welsh slate. Four
storeys above basement, two windows each. Nos 17-20 form a
centrepiece and are set forward slightly, as are nos 13-14 and
23-24. Basement and ground floor stuccoed, the ground floor
with channelled rustication. Steps up to round-arched entrance
with fluted or panelled pilasters supporting modillion cornice
on all up to no 21; nos 22-24 have fluted quarter-columns,
fanlights with decorative glazing and panelled doors of
original design. No 13 has single-storey side entrance.
Ground-floor windows round-arched, the sashes with
intersecting glazing bars, and margin-lights on all but nos 13
and 24. All upper windows flat-arched. The first-floor windows
have piano nobile proportions and 6/6 sashes, and on nos 13-16
and 21-24 are set in recessed round-arched panels with gauged
brick heads, the arcade linked by a moulded springing band.
Balconies to first-floor windows supported on brackets with
iron railings, some to individual windows, some shared.
Cornice above second floor, intact only on nos 13-14, 17-22.
On nos 17-20 the wall is carried up above cornice to form an
attic storey with stuccoed parapet; on all the rest, except no
24 which has no fourth storey, mansard roofs with dormers
behind parapets. Cast-iron railings to area. Evelyn Waugh
lived at no 17A from 1928-30.
