House, previously listed with No.31 (qv), now separate
property. Mid C16. Timber-framed and brick. 2 storey and
single storey range, plastered and part jettied, run of
peg-tiled roofs. Essentially rectangular plan. 2 red brick
stacks of late C16 and early C17. Block added to No.31 on a
curved site and accommodation partly includes rooms appearing,
from the street, to belong to No.31.
E front elevation: jettied unit to S with large late C16 stack
at S end, plain range N, set back and dropping from 2 to 1
storey at centre on site of prominent early C17 red brick
stack. Ground floor now mainly in brick to S replacing timber
framing where house is now below street level. Ground floor,
N-S, single storey unit has one 2-light casement window. Below
jetty, one C20 canted bay window of 5 fixed lights with leaded
panes. S end, on facade of No.31, C20 top hung casement
window, 2x2 panes. First floor, N-S, plaster work has remnants
of panelled pargetting with circular combed decoration, late
C18 sliding-sash window with moulded architrave, jettied unit
has 3-light casement window with leaded latticed and
rectangular panes, central light older than side ones. S end
facade of No.31, 2-light late C18 window with metal casements,
one fixed and one hinged, above, roof hips back on road
curvature with heavy C16 stack above.
Rear, W elevation: units as on front, lath and plaster work
currently being renewed, fenestration irregular, prominent C17
stack between single and 2-storeyed units has stepped lower
outer edge. Ground floor, N-S, brick single storeyed unit has
boarded C20 door and 2 windows c1800, sashes with glazing
bars, 4x4 panes. 2-storey unit, C20 fully glazed French
window, glazing bars, 4x5 panes. C20 door, upper glazing, 2x2
panes and 3 lower sunk panels. Restored medieval 2-light
mullioned window, now with leaded panes, C20 sash window,

window, glazing bars, 4x4 panes, c1800, sliding sash window
4x4 panes, restored 2-light mullioned window, c1800 sash

storeyed block has a single light casement window, prominent
C17 stack behind.
INTERIOR: linear additions in chronological order from S-N. S
end bay has skewed end wall (to No.31) containing, on ground
floor, large mid C16 fireplace, herringbone brickwork well
preserved at fire-back. To street, although replaced by bay
window, restored frieze lights remain to each side with roll
moulded mullions. Also evidence of site of large central
window of tripartite system. Room also has a line of low pegs
across partition (facing fire) for original bench seat. Unit
to N has similar large pegs in N partition frame set higher
and in rows, probably for a C17 warping frame for weaving. N
end fireplace of 2-storeyed block has original lintel,
brickwork renewed in C20. Front replacement walling in 3 N end
bays in C18 red brick. First floor framing mainly concealed
but stout tension braced framing partly visible. The S end of
the house was added in the C16 to the N end of the solar bay
of the adjacent `Wealden' house to create a new house
containing parlour (No.31) and hall (No.33) with a new massive
stack between with back-to-back fireplaces and accompanying
rear stair tower (No.31). A further C17 addition to the N end
terminated at the stack and a still further single storey
brick addition c1800 completes the range.
