Lys Cottage

Farmhouse, subsequently 2 cottages, recently restored to
single dwelling. Dated 1691 in gable of wing; altered in late
C18 and later. Red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone rubble
plinth and stone slate roof.
L-plan formed by 2-unit baffle-entry main range with
projecting 2-unit wing.
Two low storeys, 1:2 windows, with a 2-course band on a corbel
table. The main range has a doorway in line with the chimney
stack between the bays and an inserted doorway to the right, a
C20 hipped slate canopy over the two, two 2-light C18
casements at ground floor and 2 low 3-light casements at 1st
floor, all these windows with raked stone sills and large
wedge lintels.
The wing has a window of 2 square 4-pane lights wrapped round
the inner corner at ground floor, with plain stone surrounds,
and at 1st floor of the gable a 3-light casement window offset
to the right, with a raised sill and depressed arched head
under an unusual arch band of projected headers; and above
this a decorated datestone with fleur-de-lys, lettered: E S.

Ridge chimney, gable chimney to right, and parlour chimney at
outer corner of wing. Rear altered.
INTERIOR: inglenook with heck and stop-chamfered bressummer;
quarter-round moulded beams; collar truss in main range with
wattle-and-daub infil; principal rafter truss in wing.
Forms group with No.5 (Moorcroft House) to the right (q.v.).
