Farmhouse, subsequently inn, now house. Late C17 or very early
C18, enlarged in C18; altered. White-painted scored stucco on
sandstone rubble, stone slate roof.
Asymmetric U-plan formed by 2-unit main range with 2-unit
cross-wing to left and long rear wing to right.
Two storeys, 1:2 windows, the first bay gabled. The doorway
into the main range, close to the junction with the wing, is
square-headed with plain stone jambs and lintel set within a
round-headed moulded surround; the windows are large and
square with raised raked sills and contain 3-light casements
with 2-light overlights. Ridge chimney to main range and
another to the wing.
The left return of the wing has one 3-light casement at ground
floor and 2 above; the rear of this wing (which is not
rendered) has a staircase outshut overlapping the main range;
and the other wing has (inter alia) at 1st floor a sliding
sash window of 3+2 lights.
INTERIOR: large broad-chamfered beam in 3rd bay (under-drawn
ceiling in 2nd bay may conceal similar beam); dog-legged
staircase of late C17 type, with closed string, rectangular
newel, turned balusters and moulded handrail. Forms group with
Spring Cottage to the left (q.v.) and with Rosehill Cottage
adjoining to the right (q.v.).
