Cottage. JW/1769 on tablet. Sandstone rubble, timber-frame with brick
infill. Stone slate roof and sandstone rubble external end stacks with
brick shafts. Rectangular plan aligned west-north-west/east-south-east.
Two storeys. South elevation has three windows, two 4-light casements
and a central 2-light casement set on timber-framed upper floor with exposed
studs and rails of thin scantling. Stone ground floor has wrought iron 12-
pane casement to left and 9-pane window to right-hand side. Ledged C20 oak
door to left of centre. Date tablet is beneath the central first floor
window. Frame is three small square panels high from first floor to wall-
plate. Attached to right-hand side is a single-storey sandstone and timber-
framed extension with a brick stack and ledged door. Rear elevation has lean-
to extension, probably C19, with later alterations. Interior noted as having
timber-framed cross-wall and heavy ceiling beams. Formerly known as Ark
Cottages. (RCHM, Vol I, p 53-4).
