House. C17 and C18, altered in C19. Sandstone rubble, sandstone dressings,
hipped Welsh slate roofs with bell-casts, and brick stacks. H-plan with
main front to north. Cellar and three storeys. North elevation has 1:2:1
windows, glazing bar wrought iron casements under dressed segmental sandstone
heads. Windows of top floor are tripartite sashes under square heads. Left
wing has 3-light casement to ground floor; upper windows are boarded. Entry
to right of centre part has late C19 door with four panels. Two further entries
in right return of left wing have ledged doors. The first is at ground floor
level; the second, immediately above leads into first floor and is reached by
tallet stairs, rising from the north, arched over the first. South elevation
has large glazed porch to centre enclosing a side stack. West elevation has
deep window lighting the staircase. Interior (not inspected) noted as having
balusters of c1700 pattern to top landing of staircase. Oil painting mentioned
by Pevsner as being of the Judgement of Paris, in manner of Lely, is said to be
in the board room of Guys Hospital in London. C17 panelling mentioned in RCHM
said to be largely no longer in situ. (BoE, p 110; RCHM, Vol I, p 53).
