Byre incorporating fragments of Chapel of St Margaret, with
wall and bee boles attached and wall running south behind
gardens of houses on west side of The Bank. Byre probably
early-mid C19; medieval fragments C12-C13. Garden walls
probably C17/C18, inserted into Castle Outer Ward to form
house gardens. Square plan, set against corner of garden
belonging to No.7, The Bank (qv); byre lies due west of No.6,
Market Place (qv). Rubble with ashlar dressings; roof of
pantiles with stone ridge and stone slates at eaves; wall
attached is coursed rubble with ashlar dressings.
EXTERIOR: north elevation of byre has wood lintels to boarded
Dutch door at left, window at right with hit-and-miss wood
vents below 3 panes, under gable. Blind right return to Outer
Bailey; stone lintel over blocked central door on left return.
South elevation to garden shows blocked door at right with
left block jambs, disturbed masonry at right and above, and
rubble at left with flat stone lintel and well-cut block jambs
to blocked opening; coursed squared masonry in gable peak.
INTERIOR: limewash obscuring much detail; south wall has
fragment approx 0.8m high of round pier with moulded plinth of
C13 character, with blocked rectangular light above and to
left, and taller blocked light to right.
Wall attached to south is approx 3m high and has thin wood
lintel over boarded door to right of byre, with block jambs.
Thin stone sill to 2 lancets at left with stone slate shelf,
missing from right, and chamfered heads; left head made from
one stone, right head of two stones, resting on block jambs
and mullion. Wall continues north-south along gardens to join
Castle Wall. Irregular coping.
