Former Dock Entrance to Mersey Road
Tunnel
II
Dock entrance to Mersey Road Tunnel, now disused. 1931-34. By
Sir Basil Mott and J.A. Brodie as engineers, Herbert J.Rowse,
architect. White Portland stone. Retaining walls marking
approach each side of tunnel portal, with low terminal blocks
at each end, and tunnel entrance. Moderne style with Egyptian
detailing. Tunnel entrance with low relief shield flanked by
winged beasts over. Scallopped cornice to retaining walls
built on curve to each side. Terminal blocks stepped in plan
and battered in section. Narrow bands of window, and stone
grid-work with ribbed cornice band with arrow motif in low
relief.
