Roman Catholic chapel, now community centre of Roman Catholic
Church of St Leonard (qv). 1837. Front of painted rendered
stone, rear of blackened brick in English garden-wall bond.
Slate roof with coped gable and gable cross. 2-storey 2-window
gabled front to street. Chamfered plinth and raised quoins.
Central double doors of 6 raised-and-fielded panels beneath
radial-glazed fanlight divided by moulded transom and
semicircular hood painted with the words ST MARY'S COMMUNITY
CENTRE. Above the door are 2 inserted segment-headed cross
windows in plain raised surrounds, above moulded band
interrupted by painted stone window sills. Gable end is
pedimented by raised eaves band and contains blind lunette in
moulded surround enclosing painted cartouche. Rear: tall
round-arched window with radial-glazed head and vesica centre
light. INTERIOR: said to contain screen of coupled fluted
Ionic columns at east end.
