House, now flats. Early C17, altered c1722, datestone over
doorways, altered early C19, restored c1980. Rubble, limestone
dressings and ashlar gable stacks, and pantile cross-gabled
roof. Double-depth plan with gable fronting the street.
3 storeys, attic and basement; 1-window range. Gabled front
with 2 cross gables each side, strings to upper floors.
Right-hand brick segmental-arched blocked doorway, central C19
shop window, and right-hand C20 sash. 8/8-pane first-floor
sash under a relieving arch, and C20 attic casement. Left
return has stacks to both gables, a central C20 casement and
second-floor C16 mullion window, with good small
semicircular-arched leaded windows in ashlar panels to extreme
sides of upper floors. Right return a 5-window range, blind to
the left of paired central semicircular-arched early C19
doorways with imposts, and restored cross windows with leaded
metal casements.
INTERIOR: a rebuilt framed dogleg stair from the entrance with
moulded C17 door frames and panelled doors on each landing.
Former list describes 'good mid C17 features particularly 6
excellent panelled doors and a number of fine Tudor-arched
fireplaces, one in the basement has a bread oven', not
accessible at time of review. Moulded cornices, panelling and
a firestone arched window.'
Exceptional as a surviving early domestic building in the City
centre. Former front to SW elevation with 2 gables.
