rubblestone, thatched roof, half-hipped to the right with a
lateral stack to rear right and a brick stack to left gable
end. 2-unit through-passage plan with small mid C18 rear right
wing.
2 storeys; 2-window range. C18 leaded casement windows with
C19 glazing. The left range steps forward with a 3-light
window to the eaves and 4-light below; to right of centre, in
the angle of the set-back range to the right, is a C19
six-panel door, glazed to the top, under a slate lean-to
porch; one 3-light window to both floors to the right.
The Hermitage is attached to the rear right. Early C18. Render
over cob and rubblestone, thatched roof, hipped to the right,
with a brick ridge stack to the right. Originally approx
4-unit plan, now remodelled. 2 storeys; 5-window range; 3- and
4-light casement windows with leaded lights at eaves level,
those to the left in half-dormers. The ground floor has C19
two-light casement windows with small panes and some C20
windows to the left. To the right of centre a C18 six-panel
door is under a hipped thatched porch.
INTERIORS: The Lodge has chamfered cross beams to both
ground-floor rooms, an open fire to the left gable end has a
double lintel chamfered to the front and ovens to the sides.
The room to the right has a former open fire to the rear.
Flagstone and brick floors to the ground floor, some elm
boards to the first floor. The virtually central staircase,
probably repositioned, is approached from the C18 rear wing
and runs from back to front. Some early C18 two-panel doors
and some C19 planked doors. The first floor has exposed main
rafters with trenched purlins to a 3-bay roof. The roofspace
to the right, C18 or early C19, has a diagonally-set ridge
with purlins resting on the main rafters and random vertical
supports to rafters at the corner. The Hermitage not
inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached to the left of The Lodge is a
rubblestone wall approx 3m high and 30m long.
HISTORY: The Lodge is reputed to have been 2 cottages and an
old photograph shows the range to the right as having a
central door flanked by leaded casement windows.
