Cemetery chapel. 1870. Designed by William Young. Kentish Ragstone with Bath
stone dressings and grey-green slate roof. In Early English style. 3 bay nave
with south porch and north-east round tower, 1-bay chancel. Chamfered plinth,
butresses, red crested ridge tiles, Celtic cross finials. Nave: west window of
2 lights below cinquefoil. South porch, open, with turned wooden columns sup-
ported on dwarf stone wall; inside, a pointed-arched double board door with
decorative iron hinges, cast-iron boot scrapers and umbrella stand. To right of
porch a 2-light window with trefoil in head. Lancet to right again. Northern
fenestration similar, the tower having offsets beneath lower stage which has
trefoil window, and below belfry stage which has slatted cusped openings; above
this a foliage-corbelled steeple with iron finial. Chancel, lower and set back,
has a trefoil in south side, and 3-light east window with quatrefoil and hoodmould.
Interior: original fittings. The cemetery was purchased in 1870 by the Local
Burial Board who commissioned R N Shaw and W Young to undertake the work. The
designs are by Young and appear in his book, Picturesque Architectural Studies
(1872).
