Cemetery Lodge. 1870. Designed by William Young. Kentish ragstone with Bath
stone dressings; roof of Whitland Abbey slate. Single storey, irregular 3 x 2
bays. Entrance front: tall central tower porch has chamfered pointed arched
doorway, square recess above, and corbelled band under pierced wooden base of
turret which has swept pyramidal roof with wrought iron weather vane. Gabled left
bay has canted bay window with cusped lights under trefoils and hipped roof.
Right bay, set back is blind. Ashlar coping. Red crested ridge tiles. Offset
stack on ridge over left bay. Right return: bays are gabled,with 2-light windows.
The Cemetery was purchased in 1870 by the Local Burial Board who commissioned
R N Shaw and W Young to undertake the work. The designs are by Young and appear
in his book, Picturesque Architectural Studies (1872).
