Gate piers. 1870. Designed by William Young. Kentish Ragstone and Bath stone.
Three square-section piers flanking carriage and pedestrian gates. Each has
rock-faced base, offset below rock-faced shaft with moulded angle shafts, and
moulding below pyramidal leaf-finialled cap (different to each pier) which has a
trefoil panel to each face carved with foliage, birds etc (each panel different).
The original gates have been replaced. The Cemetery was purchased in 1870 by the
Local Burial Board who commissioned R N Shaw and W Young to undertake the work.
The designs are by Young and appear in his book, Picturesque Architectural Studies
(1872).
