Farm Labourer's Cottage
II
Farm labourer's cottage. Circa 1800, with minor C19 alterations. Red
brick, laid to Flemish garden wall bond, beneath a clay tile roof with
stepped eaves course and plain brick stack to north-west corner. One
and a half bays, single storey and attic, with half bay single storey
service range to east. South elevation, partially rendered, with plank
door to entrance on east side and two light, 3 pane casement to west.
West gable with central buttress to stiffen single brick thickness
wall. Two light casement windows to ground and attic floors to south
of central buttress. East gable with similar buttress, ground floor
window opening without frame and first floor window opening without
lights within the frame. Service range to east, with plain plank door
to doorway and 2 light casement to the east. Interior. Hearth to north
west corner, with plain mantel shelf and cast-iron oven range. Ceiling
joists run east-west, carried on slender chamfered spine beam which
bears upon stub brick walls. Brick partition to east encloses small
storage area. Beyond, plain plank door gives access to service range
with tiny hob grate, and brick copper to east wall. The building is
shown on a plan of Erdington dated 1802, and on the Erdington
Enclosure map of 1802-1806. An 1817 plan of cottages 'situate at the
Turf Pits' shows the existing building on the line of the road, Turf
Pit Road, which became Jerry's Lane.
It is a very rare, survival of an unaltered small dwelling of the most
primitive type, and represents a level of housing provision now almost
completely lost in both urban and rural contexts.
