School. 1874-75, by Henry Clutton for the Shuttleworth Estate (P Hunting
"Henry Clutton's country houses", Architectural History, vol. 26, 1905,
p.l05). Yellow-brick with stone dressings. Clay tile roof. Large
rectangular block with gabled roof, with single storey entrance blocks to both
gable ends. Asymmetrical front elevation. 2 4-stage projecting chimney
stacks (RH one has top stage removed), bottom 2 stages combined with
buttresses. LH stack is flanked by 2 4-light mullion and transom windows, RH
stack is flanked by 2 single-light windows with transoms. 2 entrance blocks
have plank doors. Openings have simple chamfered surrounds. Brick dentil
cornice to eaves, at sill level, and to chimneys at transom level and top.
Square bell-cote to LH has tile-hung base, timber supports with curved braces,
fishscale edged louvres, and pyramidal roof with sprocketed eaves. Entrance
blocks have rounded corners and plain parapets. Gable ends have oeil-de-boeuf
window with semi-circular dripstone to attic.
