House. Probably early to mid C16 in origin, remodelled in C17. Probably C18 rear
range. Painted rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof. Brick shaft to rear
lateral stone rubble hall stack enclosed by early C20 outshut. Brick shaft to stone
rubble stack to front gable end of rear range which has slate roof.
Plan: main range consists of hall and former inner room, later used as cart shed and
now converted to garage with chambers over both to left of through-passage, the
lower end of the house later incorporated into part of Barry (q.v.). Winder
staircase to right of rear lateral hall stack. Hall and inner room originally open
to the roof, probably ceiled over in C17, but inner room floor removed at later
date, and replaced in C20 with partial flooring to front and rear. Rear range,
formerly detached but now connected by early C20 rear outshut, now open to the roof
of single room plan formerly with small room to rear. Fireplace across front left-
hand angle. The original use is uncertain, it may originally have served as a
dwelling but 2 wide blocked doorways on the courtyard side suggests it may have
later been converted for storage.
2 storeys. 3 window range. Slight eyebrow dormers. C20 fenestration throughout,
all 2 light casements. Thatched gabled roof to brick porch. C19 ledged plank door;
refaced in C20. Double garage plank doors at left end.
Interior: very unspoilt. Ogee-moulded hall fireplace lintel with run out stops.
Dressed stone jambs and bread oven. C18 raised and fielded 2 panelled doors survive
throughout, including narrow door from hall into present garage. Thick cob wall
partition rises to apex of roof on hall side of through-passage. C17 winder
staircase to right of hall stack. Boxed in cross ceiling beam to hall. Upper floor
retains a wide 6 panelled door with scratch mouldings to the cover strips beside
hall stack. C17 door surround with 4 panelled scratch-moulded door between chambers
over hall and passage.
Roof: Thoroughly smoke-blackened roof structure over hall and inner room, with
single raised cruck truss over hall with cranked collar and 2 tiers of threaded
purlins and ridge purlin, the large peg ends protruding rather than sawn. Smoke-
blackened thatch battens and rafters also intact. 2 smoke-blackened boards each
side of ridge at lower end of hall may be remains of a louvre. Roof over passage
and lower end not accessible. Rear wing has roughly chamfered fireplace lintel.
Lime-ash floor to rear section. 3 trusses with straight principals apparently
reusing some C17 timbers, with 2 tiers of trenched purlins, collars are added.
Ardlui is a good example of a former open hall house situated facing the "town
place" in a tight nucleated settlement. The interior has good quality C17 and C18
fittings and has had few later alterations.
