Garden building. C18 and early C19 farm building possibly modified by Detmar Blow
1915, to form a closing axial feature to the vista through the stable yard arch-
way on the approach to the house from the south. Red brick, tiled roofs. A
tall central block has a hipped roof with terminal end gablets to a short
ridge which supports a cast metal bird (peacock?) gilded. To either side a
lower single storey range of equal length with half hipped end set back
slightly from the central C18 block. At high level in the central block
facing the forecourt a niche with pointed arch head which contains a later
mediaeval (C14?) carved stone statuette of the Virgin said to have come from
the chapel of the manor house. In centre of left wing a pointed arched window:
wood frame with glazing bars. In wing to right adjacent to central block, a
doorway with segmental arched head and vertical boarded door. Group value
with other buildings at Wootton Manor.
Country Life, April 7, 1955.
