Back-to-back cottages with knitters' workshops. c1845, altered
mid C20. Red brick, with slate roofs and 2 gable and 2 ridge
stacks. 2 storeys plus attics; 3 window range. 3 plain sashes
and 3 doors with overlights, all with brick segmental arches.
2 original beaded panelled doors. Above, 3 smaller plain
sashes with similar heads. Attics have six 2-light glazing bar
casements. At the rear, a similar elevation, with windows
altered or boarded.
INTERIOR has 2 fitted cupboards flanking a renewed fireplace.
These cottages are a unique survival in the city centre.
Back-to-back houses were still being built in the newly
enclosed outskirts in 1852, and cottages with knitters'
windows were built in Calverton as late as 1857.
