Corn Exchange and Clinton Rooms

GV II

Corn Exchange, now public house and restaurant. 1849-50. By TC
Hine of Nottingham. Converted late C20. Italianate style. Red
brick with ashlar and terracotta dressings. Roof not visible.
Windows are casements with stone mullions.
2 storeys; 5 window range. Recessed centre, 3 windows, with
projecting end bays defined by quoins, all under a modillion
cornice and parapet. In the centre, a window flanked by double
doors with fanlights, and on either side, a matching window.
The right window is flanked by smaller doorways. All these
openings have round arches and rusticated surrounds. Above, a
minor cornice with encaustic tiles. In the centre, 3 cross
casements, flanked by 3-light cross casements. All these have
segmental pediments. Above the windows, a string course with
strapwork, a modillion cornice, and a parapet with patterned
brickwork.
INTERIOR, refitted late C20, has moulded cornices on the
ground floor.
