GV II
Formerly known as: Nos.7-9 ARWENACK STREET.
Terrace of 3 town houses with later shops. Early C19. Stucco
on probable rubble; slatehanging at rear; original scantle
slate roof to No.8, otherwise asbestos slate, all with deep
eaves on paired brackets; brick stacks: end stack on left;
axial stack towards right.
Double-depth plan plus rear extensions. 3 storeys; 3-window
range. C20 copies of original hornless sashes with margin
panes to Nos 8 & 10; mid to late C19 4-pane hornless sash to
No.7; later 2-light casement above. Pilasters articulate
facade; 1st-floor windows within recessed elliptical-arched
panels; impost strings and sill string surviving to No.8.
Ground floor has 3 shop fronts: 2-light shop front with
panelled end pilasters and segmental arches to No.7, late C19
3-light shop front with end pilasters and moulded entablature
to No.8; similar but simplified shop front to No.10; both with
splayed sidelights to doorways with original overlights.
Round-arched ope (passage) doorway left of No.8.
INTERIOR of No.8 has many original features including: dog-leg
staircase with stick balusters and turned newels; plaster
ceiling cornice with moulded band and corner blocks, and
panelled doors. An interesting neo-classical facade, the sash
windows having unusual glazing-bar patterns which anticipate
later designs characteristic of Falmouth.
