Cross Hayes House and attached wall,
railings and gate posts

GV II*

House. Dated 1728 on hopper, extended late C18 and early C19.
Limestone ashlar and rubble, brick gable stacks and stone
slate roof with rear cross gables.
STYLE: early Georgian.
PLAN: T-shaped double-depth plan with rear SE infill
extension.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, attic and cellar; 4-window range. A
symmetrical 3-window front has banded pilaster strips,
first-floor string, cornice and parapet, with coped end
gables; openings have moulded surrounds and segmental head.
Doorway with scrolled brackets to a flat canopy, good
rectangular overlight with a lantern and a 6-panel door with
glazed top panels. Keyed architraves to 6/6-pane sashes, and 2
gabled dormers with C20 casements.
The right return has a foundation stone inscribed WC 1728, and
a dated lead hopper.
The 1-window extension to the right has a doorway and
first-floor 6/6-pane sash beneath half a gable.
In front is a single-storey screen wall with round-arched
recess containing an inserted doorway.
Rear elevation has 2 gables, larger to the left, behind a
cornice and parapet, a central late C18 semi-circular
full-height bay with three 6/6-pane sashes to each floor; the
SE extension has a full-height mid C18 canted bay with
ground-floor Venetian window with an elliptical-arched head
and 8/12-pane sash, 8/8-pane sashes to the sides and above;
the gables each contain round-arched windows.
INTERIOR: fine original details include a central lateral open
well dogleg stair with curtail, column-on-vase balusters and a
moulded ramped rail; downstairs panelled rooms with moulded
cornices and ceiling beams, rear eared fire surround; 4- and
6-panel doors and panelled shutters; decorative fireplaces;
vaulted cellars.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached brick ramped walls enclose front
area with spear-headed railings and cast-iron gate posts,
formerly with urns; attached railings to rear garden.
A very fine town house making a prominent feature in the
townscape.
