Former teacher's house, now offices. Dated 1851 and 1857.
Limestone ashlar with alternate grey sandstone and limestone
dressings, cross axial stacks and a slate hipped roof.
Polychromatic Artisan Mannerist style. Double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and cellar; 5-window range. A symmetrical
front has alternate-coloured quoins forming pilaster strips at
the corners to a deep modillion cornice, with similar
dressings to segmental-arched outer doorways and window
surrounds, with moulded keys and hood moulds; console canopies
to the doorways set below 4-pane overlights with cartouches
above carrying dates, and 8-panel doors; windows with shallow
cill blocks and 8/8-pane horned sashes with central mullion
bar. Coursed rubble right-hand return.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Built as the Headmaster's House of the 1857
Church of England School, later Municipal Offices.
A finely-crafted building which makes a significant
contribution to this group of listed buildings.
