Medical supervisor's residence, now medical offices. c1850.
Designed by Thomas Smith, architect. Grey-brown brick, laid to
Flemish bond, with orange brick and stucco dressings, hipped
Welsh slate roof with eaves supported on coupled bracket
modillions. Grey brick chimneys with plinth band, oversailing
courses and square cream terracotta pots. Central entry plan.
EXTERIOR: 5 bays, 2 storeys, with centre breaking slightly
forward. First floor with 5 recessed sash windows alternating
divided and plain glazed, and set beneath alternating orange
and cream rubbed brick flat arches, all with stucco sills.
Centre bay has doorway raised on 3 stone steps, with recessed
6-panel door, the upper 4 panels glazed, with plain glazed
fanlight above moulded transom. Stucco doorcase with Tuscan
Doric pilasters, with torus moulded bases on plinth blocks,
entablature with fascia frieze, moulded cornice and blocking
course. Centre bay has cornice of stucco modillions, closely
spaced, below plain unmoulded projecting band flush with
eaves. Recessed, lower, 2-storey service wing at left (east).
Rear elevation first floor with 4 windows, 12-pane sashes
below slightly cambered rubbed brick flat arches. Ground floor
has large projecting late C19 mullion and transom bay window
with fascia frieze and lead covered blocking piece.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
This house was probably built as the medical supervisor's
residence to the adjoining County Hospital (qv) by the same
architect Thomas Smith, and it forms an important
architectural element of this hospital group.
