Semi-detached houses. c1825. Stucco front, brown stock brick
laid to Flemish bond to sides and rear. Hipped Welsh slated
roofs above moulded cornice, with widely spaced modillions.
Central stuccoed chimneystack, with bands, and orange clay
pots.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 4-bay front, with recessed 2-storey 3 bay
wings extended across width of side, that at left forming a
separate dwelling, No.37. Second floor with 4 recessed 9-pane
sash windows; first floor with 4 recessed 12-pane sash windows
above band. Ground floor has 4 recessed 15-pane sash windows,
with semicircular heads, set within outer arched recess with
projecting impost bands, rising from stucco plinth. Recessed
wings behind and above original single bay ground floor
porches which have recessed 6-panel doors, below semicircular
fanlights. 2 sash windows to first floor, between pilaster
strips and bands which subdivide elevation. Ground floor at
left has central projecting bay window with panelled
pilasters, frieze and cornice. Arched doorway with 6-panel
door and semicircular fanlight at extreme left.
Right-hand wing of No.41 has large 16-pane sash window on
ground floor.
Side elevation of No.41 has segmentally arched recesses with
imposts and keyblocks.
Rear elevation has 2 windows, ground, first and second floors
in 3-storey centre, with irregular fenestration to wings. Long
narrow 2-storey stuccoed rear outshoot with Welsh slated roof
to No.37.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: garden wall to right-hand (west) rear of
No.41 of red brick, laid to Flemish bond, with overburnt
headers, and with stucco panel within which is set 6 flush
panel door (the upper 2 panels glazed), recessed within
moulded surround, with projecting dripmould above.
This development of semi-detached housing was part of the
growth of Hertford along North Road towards the County
Hospital during the late 1820s. It was shown as 'North
Crescent' on an 1830 map.
