Terraced row with shops, 1688 (or very shortly afterwards). Original
brown brick fronts, tiled roofs. 3 storeys and dormered attics. 9 windows
wide, uniform but not equally spaced. Ground floor with later C.20 neo
Regency shop fronts. Upper floors have near-flush framed glazing bar
sashes under segmental gauged arches with brick keys. Rusticated brick
quoins to left flank of No. 21. Plat band to 2nd floor. Parapet with
coping. Interior original plans largely survive with semi-spiral stairs in
rectangular compartments, elements of panelling etc. Valuable survival of
modest late C.17 housing. Part of Nicholas Barbon's 1682 development of
the Newport House site.
