Angel headstones at St Marys, Radcliffe on Trent, Mary Brewster 1731, engraver L Claxton

Uploader's Comments

-65-- Engraved slate with a winged angel indicated by swirls, in the style of L Claxton, to Mary Brewster d. 7th Feb 1731 age 71. Also Elizabeth Brewster daughter of John and Mary Brewster d. 24th April 1692 in her infancy. Another Elizabeth (details submerged). This headstone may have been made as proof that Mary was married to John Brewster. For a smallholder, such proofs may have shown continuity of land use and nominal ownership. This was vitally important if the Squire was making enclosures, as subsistence farming land could otherwise be lost to ordinary villagers. The slate may have been engraved as late as c1750.
